| The growth period is the most important stage in a dog's life, determing the future adult dog's character, body shape, proportions and looks. To develop properly, the puppy needs a diet which takes proper account of his nutritional requirements.\n \nSmall, medium, large and giant-sized puppies do not have the same growth patterns. There are fundamental differences related to the SIZE and WEIGHT of the dog.\n\nLength of growth period\n\nThis varies from 8 months for small-sized puppies, to 12 months for medium-sized dogs, 15 -18 months for large dogs and up to 24 months for the really giant ones.\n \nGrowth rate\n\nAt 1 year old, a Dachshund has grown to 25 times its birth weight, while a Mastiff is 100 times larger.\n \nRange of adult weights\n\n\nAdult weights range from 1 kg for a Chihuahua to 80 kg for a mastiff, i.e. a ratio of 1:80, compared to man, where this ratio is just 1:2.\n |
